As we all know, there is a lot of confusion regarding the recently announced IDP that is to be done by the 7th sem GTU uniformly in all branches. Following points simplify the whole process so that there is no confusion amongst GTU students:

  • First of all, the IDP is actually in a project format. However, it is not like our senior’s long term project evtending upto 6 months but kind of short term project. You would not be given more than a couple of days a week for the project though this may vary from college to college. In some colleges, they ask the students to complete it in a couple of months.
  • Now, as per GTU instructions, colleges are supposed to completely help  the students in finding the IDP’s. However in some colleges, students have to find out the IDPs themselves after searching and being in contact with companies. However by general experience it has been found that students arent getting cooperation from these companies. That apart, some of the companies in the GTU list do not exist/have been shut down or are unsuitable for us. Many of the companies have wrong numbers enlisted.  This has also to be taken into account.
  • Now what we have to do in IDP is first of all, contact/select a company and ask them whether they are ready/have provision for IDP. IDP basically means you have to ask the company for any present technical problems that they are facing or working upon. Then you have to select a particular problem and define it as a problem statement after consultation with your alloted faculty guide /mentor of your college. Select the problem as per your aptitude/caliber and keeping in mind the limited time that we have.
  • Now, it is highly unlikely that the companies will offer you a live project as we neither have the required knowledge/expertise on any advanced project nor can companies trust us with their confidential info. Hence, that adds to the problem.
  • the format for IDP is given on GTU site in circulars area. The IDP is to be converted into a full fledged project upon which you need to work for the 7th sem. Though GTU says the 7th sem project might extend upto 8th sem with 8 or 12 credits(probably) it is again highly unlikely as no company can allow students to work upon for a whole year.
  • GTU has specifically stated that it has formed tie-ups with all the enlisted companies and incase any of the companies do not respond/allow you to consult them for IDP or if your college does not help you,  you can contact GTU office immediately and action will taken against concerned college/company.
  • It is very much likely that without any reference or direct help from your college, you will find it very difficult to get an IDP from a good company.
  • Your IDP must be ready by the time your college starts i.e. around 1st week of July and submitted to GTU before 7th July.
  • Once you select any company and they agree to give you an IDP, you will need a No-Objection-Certificate or NOC from your college and also a resume if asked.
  • There are a total of 150 marks alloted for the project and 4 practical credits/hours. 100 marks will be externally evaluated and 50 marks will be internally evaluated.
  • Your project will be reviewed by GTU and higher marks will be alloted for innovative projects and will also be published so that other students can see your project and learn something new.
  • And ya, last but not the least, select the IDP according to the field you want to go on in. That is , if you are interested in the field of communication, go for telecom/communication systems manufacturing companies. If you are interested in embedded/VLSI then in companies specializing in embedded systems and so on…

I have included as many details as I could. I hope you will find it useful.

  11. taral says:

thanks ashka. really it is very true. No company is ready for it. Some are even not existing. Can Anyone suggest me any IDP & some company name that will surely support me for that?

  12. taral says:

in my last comment i wanted industry about EC branch in/near ahmedabad

  13. Ashka says:

Taral, GTU has posted the list of industries on its website. But as you must have figured out, the list is not very useful. Actually most of the students I know have got IDP’s in companies with reference or help from college. I have heard that ISRO is giving projects this time a some of my colleagues have applied over there. That apart, if you have some original idea which might be practically useful, then you can do the project on your own under the guidance of your faculty professor. No company I know guarantees to give IDP to all the students who apply for it. There are a few good companies like intellicon, masibus,MCBS,etc. Avoid Telecom companies as they have mass layoffs.

  14. taral says:

    thanks ashka for your reply.
I agree with everything you explained. But my problem is that, my college is new. i am from the 1st batch of it. So, the faculties are not enough capable to help for finding company.they have told us to find company ourselves & so my only 4-5 colleagues got company.Really @ this moment i feel that, for me it was better “to get admission in top college, not in top branch”. & now as you suggested i have almost set mind to do a very innovative project myself, as I have also done lots of projects successively in past myself.but then what shoud i do about the “details of industry particulars” in GTU IDP statement form?

  15. Ashka says:

Do one thing, discuss your idea with your faculty and then ask them as to what should they write in such a case. Better to ask your HOD or someone of higher authority. Explain to them the whole situation. They might know what to do as in this case I don’t have any experience of dealing with the problem. Also, define your problem/project in such a way that it should be practically useful in solving or say an answer to any technical glitches/problems.

  16. taral says:

ok. i will do as u suggested. Thanks for your kind response, ashka. & i want to ask u 1 more que.i am preparing for gate 2012. so As per ur view what will be most efficient way to prepare for GATE. & how should i prepare it: through Reference books/private publication’s special GATE book?

  17. Ashka says:

Well there aren’t many good coaching classes for Gate in Guj. the best you can do is to prepare through correspondence course from institutes like brilliant tutorials, ace academy, gateforum etc. GK publishers also publish their annual gate prep book. That apart, i would recommend you enroll for mock test that these coaching classes offer, preferably go for ace academy’s online mock test series. ont even by mistake enroll for classroom coaching in guj.

  18. hardik says:

    thanks ashka
    this is really helpful

  19. chirag patel says:

hey ashka did u mail me some useful info. abt the idp of our project which is helpful for me. b’coz i contact many company n place which is given in the list of gtu is may be not there and some r not give the training n defination to us so i want ur help 4 that

  20. Ashka says:

Well, if u are not getting any company at all, u can try to do the project yourself under the guidance of your college faculty as I have explained in my reply above. Many students have been facing this problem and u are not alone. Usually, most of the students have obtained IDP with the help of some or the other reference, and by now most of the companies would be full. Ask your HOD if it is possible to do the project yourself. But make sure it is innovative. All the possible details about IDP are posted in various articles on this site. And make sure u decide your idp by next week.

    HOW CAN DEFINED A IDP

  23. Chaitanya Vyas says:

First of all i would like to say thanks to you for this important information. I have started my IDP But if you have any idea just reply me that which two days we will get to go to company for finding the solution of our IDP. and second thing you just know that we have fill up one form from GTU so what we will have to submit with that form. hoping for favorable consideration and wish you all the best for IDP.

  24. divya patel says:

    hi.
    Thanks for all information….
can u plz send me some info abt idp? and company’s name near rajkot where i coud get idp of ec branch?

  25. Ashka says:

Well, as u can see in the form, u need to fill in ur personal information. Therafter, fill in the details of the coordinator who coordinated ur project with th industry people. It can be ur udisha coordinator/faculty/company representative or contact. Then, write down the industry details i.e. info about ur chosen company. As for the alloted day(s) for the project, it varies from college to college. So, for that u will need to ask ur college authorities.

  26. Ashka says:

I have already discussed what is IDP. As for now,you only need to give a problem definition to your college which states precisely and concisely what your project is about i.e. the technical problm/upgradation/improvement or any new application that u are going to develop.GTU says u need to submit your IDP by 7th July latest. For more details, it’s better that u ask your faculty guide in your college.

  27. Ajay Patel says:

if any student want training as Android or Iphon app dev as in good company mail me will give you some company details….

  28. Chaitanya Vyas says:

ok thank you very much for spending your valuable time and giving the important information to me. Thanks a lot.

  29. hardik nakarani says:

    hi, all student of gtu

I am student of electrical eng . if any body of have the subject of idp plz mail me.

  30. harsh says:

hey ashka i m an IC (instrumentation and control) student ..i have approached to some companies for IDP but i m not able to find a single IDP.. my college faculty is also not helping us to find one ..i request u to give me one IDP related to my branch ..PLZ THIS IS URGENT AS THERE R NOT MANY DAYS LEFT …plz help me ..

  31. Ashka says:

Well, it is compulsory for the college to allot an internal guide for every student group that is, a faculty from yuor college. Many students have opted for home projects and u can do the same too. Ask a good faculty for a home based project which u can do yourself under the guidance of a faculty guide. This is the only alternative. As I am in EC, I cannot provide u with any IDP…if any faculty doesnt provide u with a project, try asking students of other good colleges. U might get atleast an IDP from them..

  32. Parth says:

Hey Ashka, this has been surely very helpful. But you suggested some of the students to make their own project, I’m a bit confused here. Are we suppose to make a project(working model) this semester or are we suppose to just define the problem of the company and provide solutions to it in soft copy as it has been written on IDP form provided by GTU. On what will we be evaluated, a working model or a soft copy of 5-6 pages which GTU has asked to submit.

  33. Ashka says:

U will have to partially complete the chosen project (which will be based on your chosen IDP) or wholly depending upon the project complexity. U can also choose to do 2 projects in each sem. And if your project is hardware based, u will need to develop some working model partially which is a part of the whole project. At the end of sem after the external exams, u will need to submit a report and also demonstrate the model in front of external faculty who will take your viva on the project. And similarly in the next sem. IDP form only includes your project title/IDP definition.

  34. Parth says:

    GTU has provided following format.

    PROBLEM SUMMARY
 The problem summery may be a concise description of the industry related technical issues which can state the problem, which the student has found out while visiting the industry.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM
 The problem statement has to be well defined in 3-5 pages with detailed facts and figures as and when possible. The description can have figures/inputs from floor persons from industries/ parameters related to specific domain of technology.

    EXPECTED OUTCOME
 The students while interacting with industry persons have to note down the expected out comes (in 1-2 page) from that particular industry due to the proposed innovation either in product or processes. This will gauge the industrial needs and students progress while working on the final year project.

    OTHER DESCRIPTION (IF ANY)
 The students are advised to do some literature research related to the corresponding problem/innovation both before and after visiting the industry/MSME during summer vacation. They have to suggest some suggestions about the issues based on literature research of corresponding problems/projects in feasible cases.

Where does a working model come in this? And they have asked to submit the above thing in soft copy which will b evaluated

  37. sagar kubavat says:

hey, ashka i’m diploma student and IDP is degree level project,
don’t u think its more complicated for diploma student..??

  38. Ashka says:

I do not have any details regarding diploma courses…anyways if u have IDP then I say suggest u select the project according to your calibre and knowledge..your project need not be as complex as a degree level student. As far as I know, final sem diploma students underwent project/training even when the courses were under GU. So, I am sure u will find projects suiting u…why not ask your concerned faculties a well as class mates?

  39. Dev says:

Hey i m making a project on SWITCHING OF MOTOR THROUGH SMS and i m not getting the program of these on internet so if any one can help me through these then it would be veryyy helpfullll…

  44. chintan says:

hey how many students in a group are allowed in IDP? is there any particular criteria? reply pleasee..

  45. Ashka says:

Usually students do the project individually or in groups of 2,3 or 4. Though more number of members in a group will mean your project will have to larger and more complex. The complexity of the project is in direct proportion to the size of the group. There is no other criteria on the no of members in a group. That depends on you; you can do it alone also and with a group also according to your comfort and convenience.
